For this DIY pet bed, you'll need some basic materials:
  • Choose a durable fabric that matches your home's style. You'll need about 2.5 yards.
  • Select a thread that complements your fabric.
  • Repurpose an old pet bed lining or get lightweight fabric.
  • Gather stuffing or foam to make the bed soft and comfy.
  • Opt for buttons and loops for closure, ensuring easy access for washing.
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Ruler
  • Measuring tape
  • Hand sewing needle
Our pet bed design is straightforward—a square with a top, bottom, and side panel, perfect for pets of all sizes. Now, let's get started!

Step 2: Measure and Cut

Make sure your pet's bed is big enough for them to stretch out comfortably by taking its measurements accurately. For seam allowance, multiply all sides by 1/2 inch. Make three cuts:
  • Top/Bottom: 23" x 23" (or adjusted to your pet's size)
  • Side Panel: 89" x 13" (for a 12" tall bed)
Step 3: Stitch the Side Panel

Right sides together, pin the side panel to the top. Sew along one side of the fabric, stopping 1/2 inch from the corner. After rotating the side panel to line up with the following square side, lift the needle and snip a diagonal notch at the corner. This procedure should be repeated for each corner. After sewing the final side, leave a little opening.

Step 4: Attach the Bottom

To attach the bottom, repeat step 4, but leave one side unstitched so you may stuff it. Make sure the bed will close where the opening is. The liner and stuffing can be inserted through this opening.

Step 5: Topstitch the Seams

To avoid fraying, fold seam allowances within the bed and topstitch. Remember that you need an opening to stuff the bed, so don't sew the bottom to the side panel.

Step 6: Create the Lining

To produce a bed liner:[*]Repeat steps 3-5.[*]Leave some space for stuffing on one side.[*]If you want more support, add foam padding to the liner.

Step 7: Stuff and Close

Add your chosen filling to the liner. Allow your pet to test it out to make sure it's comfy for them. After that, topstitch the lining's opening shut.

Step 8: Button Closure

On the side panel, stitch buttons and use fabric strips to make loops for closing. Calculate the length required to loop around the buttons and firmly sew them.

Step 9: Assemble Your Pet Bed

The outer shell should be placed within the filled lining. Make sure foam rests at the bottom if it is being used. You may close the pet bed by encircling the loops around the buttons.
